StagecraftStagecraft refers the to technical and backstage aspects of performance art. This includes lighting, sound, set construction and design, costume, stage management, production, pyrotechnics, props, and related areas. Greek StagecraftStagecraft probably began with the ancient Greeks, who constructed the impressive Theatre of Dionysos at Athens in the 6th century BC. All the great Greek tragedies and comedies, which were written in the 4th and 5th centuries BC, were intended specifically to be performed at the Theatre of Dionysos. One of the greatest of the Greek playrights was Sophocles. Unfortunately, only seven of his plays have survived in their entirety. His well known works include Oedipus the King, Antigone, and Electra. Aeschylus was another of the great Greek playrights. His well known plays include Agamemnon, Prometheus Bound, and the Orestia trilogy. Finally, no survey of ancient Greek theatre would be complete without Euripides, whose works include Hippolytus, The Bacchae, and Medea. Roman StagecraftThe Romans did not have the same influence on theatre as the Greeks did. While the Greek playwrites are still famous today, few could name any Roman playwrites.
Before 53 BCE there weren't even any permanent stone theatres in Rome because they were forbidden by the government. In the imperial
years, the Romans did build theatres througout the empire, but they usually hosted mimes and pantomimes instead of plays.
